Shibas are small sized dogs, well balanced, well boned with well developed muscles. Constitution strong. Action quick, free and beautiful. Important proportions: The ratio of height at withers to length of body is 10:11.
Shibas were used as a hunting dog for birds and small animals as well as a companion dog.
The Shiba's temperament is faithful, with keen senses (sensitive) and high alertness.
The Shiba has a broad forehead, cheeks well developed and a defined stop with a slight furrow. The nasal bridge straight and the nose black in colour is desirable. The muzzle is moderately thick and tapering; lips are tight.
The Shiba's eyes are relatively small, triangular and dark brown in colour; the corners of the eyes are upturned.
The ears are relatively small, triangular, slightly inclining forward and firmly pricked.
The Shiba has strong teeth with a scissor bite.

The neck is thick, strong and well balanced with the head and body.
The Shiba's shoulders are moderately sloping, elbows tight and the forearms straight.
The back is straight and strong; loin broad and muscular; chest deep, ribs moderately sprung and belly well drawn up.
The Shiba has long uper thighs, lower thighs short but well developed; hocks thich and tough.
The Shiba's toes are tightly closed and well arched. Pads are hard and elastic and the nails are hard and dark in colour is desirable.
The tail is set on high, thick, carried vigorously curled or curved as a sickle, the tip nearly reaching hocks when let down.
The gait is light and brisk.
The Shiba's outer coat is harsh and straight, undercoat is soft and dense; hair on the tail slightly long and standing off.

Shiba Breed Standard

Height at withers - Dogs 40 cms (15.75 inches), Bitches 37 cms (14.5 inches) with a tolerance of 1.5 cms (0.5 inches) smaller or taller.

Colour
The Shiba's colours are red, black and tan, sesame, black sesame, red sesame.
Definition of sesame:
Sesame - equal mixture of white and black hairs.
Black Sesame - more black than white hairs.
Red Sesame - ground colour of red with a mixture of black hairs.
All of the above mention colours must have 'Urajiro'.
'Urajiro' - whitish coat on the sides of the muzzle and on the cheeks, on the underside of the jaw and neck, on the chest and stomach, on the underside of the tail and on the inside of the legs.
